Bitcoin Q&A: What was SegWit2x?

仮想通貨

A review on some “deep history” of Bitcoin… that is, one year ago. What was SegWit2x? Why should block sizes be limited? What is the “real Bitcoin”? What are the interdependent consensus constituents, and how do consensus changes succeed or fail?

Chapters
0:00 Is the size of the blockchain an issue for the ordinary personal computer?
2:00 As we see in Session 2, the mechanism Bitcoin uses to confirm transactions, and resolve the Byzantine Generals’ Problem, is based on consensus of the network. We now have pressure for activating SegWit2x in November. It may cause a hard fork. Is this an attack on the Byzantine Generals’ Problem solution?
6:29 Proof-of-work consensus, developer consensus, miner consensus, exchange consensus, and wallet consensus. Can you please develop or expand on these forms of consensus?
9:15 How does a proposal fail to proceed after having majority support from miners? I am studying the events of SegWit2x and having trouble consolidating in my mind how SegWit2x failed to proceed on a technical level. People often cite SegWit2x as an example of how
users running full nodes can keep miners in check. I understand that more than 80% of miners signaled in support of SegWit2x, as per BIPs 8 and 9. What is the mechanism by which this proposal failed?
